Sculpture Stand. March 2009.
Collaboration between healer/visionary artist Bill Crosby and yours truly.
This project harkens back to the age-old symbiotic relationship between the sculptor and the blacksmith. Historically, blacksmiths have been relied upon to supply a myriad of sculpting tools, measuring devices and armatures essential to the sculptor’s process.
Around the holidays Bill approached me with the notion of building a substantial work-stand for the life-sized bust of William Blake that he was sculpting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Blake
His intent was to create a ‘ridiculously detailed and provocative highly-functional piece of art’ which exemplifies the essence of his ‘in progress’ sculpture. (imagine a transcendental, psychedelic, human-beast William Blake with full size, anatomically correct eagle wings, etc, etc…)
The sculpture/stand assemblage is destined for Burning Man 2009.
We quickly came up with a general design according to various pragmatic requirements. The main concern was that the worksurface needed to have adjustable height and be able to swivel. So, we incorporated a beefy screw mechanism into the vertical tube and topped it with a 1000# ‘lazy susan’. All of our measurements were based off of the connection between these components. The base framework and tripod were built first and then we started layering on the details…
